Ocean waves in Hannover: the Large Wave Current Flume

9.00-11.30

LUH / Sören Pinsdorf

Three-metre-high waves covering a distance of 300 metres: the Large Wave Current Flume boasts a powerful tidal current system, a deep section for investigating the foundation structures of offshore wind turbines and a highly efficient wave machine capable of generating ocean waves. The large-scale research infrastructure operated by Leibniz University Hannover’s Coastal Research Centre and TU Braunschweig – which is one of a kind globally – makes it possible to generate waves and current simultaneously. The researchers are developing long-term solutions that address the requirements of coastal protection and the ecology of the nearshore zone. Due to construction currently underway, no waves can be generated during the tour, but the massive flume is nevertheless an impressive sight.
