When science meets the room: Live Journalism for a world in crisis

In times of climate disruption, scientific uncertainty, and polarisation, science journalists must communicate complexity without losing trust. Through two distinct live interventions – a JIVE performance and a Reporter Slam – this session explores how different live journalism formats can deepen understanding, engagement and trust around complex science stories.

Eva Wolfangel

Eva Wolfangel is an award-winning German science journalist known for investigative reporting on technology, AI and science policy. A regular at Wissenswerte, she has adapted investigative work for live journalism formats.

Christoph Schwaiger

Christoph Schwaiger is a freelance journalis covering the beats of of health, technology, and current affairs whose stories have been published by Live Science, New Scientist, BioSpace, and the Global Investigative Journalism Network, among other outlets. He is also one of the European Parliament’s registered experts in the field of science communication. Having graduated in Applied Biomedical Sciences, he went on to pursue an MA in journalism from the University of Groningen, graduating cum laude. He is based in Groningen, the Netherlands.

Christine Liehr

Christine Liehr is co-founder of Headliner and a leading producer of live journalism in Germany. She specialises in adapting various reporting formats and beats, such as science, for the stage while maintaining editorial rigour.

Sebastian Lange

Sebastian Lange is an award-winning saxophonist who joined the improvising symphony orchestra Stegreif in 2018. Since 2023, he has shaped the musical identity of every JIVE production as its musical lead.

Vera Penêda

Vera Penêda leads programmes at the European Journalism Centre and has mapped live journalism initiatives across Europe. She works at the intersection of journalism, science and democratic innovation.
